Sustainable Energy Management and the Built Environment (October 2006 - present)
Since October 2006 Foresight has been scoping a project on Sustainable Energy Management and the Built Environment. The project was announced in the Energy Challenge in July 2006, as one of the activities resulting from the Government's Energy Review.
Caroline Flint MP, Minister of State for Housing and Planning, Communities and Local Government; Phil Woolas MP, Minister of State for the Environment, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Malcolm Wicks MP, Minister of State for Energy, Department for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform, have agreed to sponsor this project.
The Project's Director is Professor John Beddington, Chief Scientific Adviser for Government and Head of the Government Office for Science.
The Project is overseen by a high level Stakeholder Group. Click here for list of members of the Stakeholder Group. Click here for the list of Lead Experts.
Project Aim
To explore how the UK built environment could evolve to help manage the transition over the next five decades to secure, sustainable, low carbon energy systems that meet the needs of society, the requirements of the economy, and the expectation of individuals.
Project outputs will include:
- The evidence base for the project's analysis - this will include scientific reviews; and the result of expert consultation.
- Visions of the future - underpinned by an understanding of the key drivers.
- A plan of action to take forward the findings of the project involving leading stakeholders.
Project Process:
- The science evidence base has been commissioned.
- Exploration of future uncertainties, drivers, challenges and opportunities, engaging experts and stakeholders, will take place between April and Dec 2007.
- The material will be analysed in the first half of 2008 and findings will be launched in the summer of 2008.
Current work
- We held three workshops in early November with representatives from across academia, government and business, to discuss the project scope. See report of workshops
- We have commissioned the science evidence base
