e-Sight digial newsletter

e-Sight is a quarterly newsletter providing you with all the latest news about the UK Foresight programme.

Scope

Workshops

In September 2004, Foresight held two scoping workshops for the Intelligent Infrastructure Project. Around 100 leading academics and subject experts - from diverse disciplines such as artificial intelligence, complexity, energy, logistics, transport studies, engineering, social science and economics - participated

The workshops were designed to identify

  • current and future developments in science, technology and society which will affect the way things move - or are moved - around
  • how intelligent infrastructure might evolve in twenty to fifty years' time
  • the questions that the project should focus on
  • recommendations for state of science reviews

Futures work

A Review of Futures work was undertaken to inform the project scope by identifying:

Key drivers and trends in relevant current reports
Where Foresight could add the greatest value;

Initial Core questions

The outputs from the workshops and futures review have been discussed with the project experts and the initial core questions which the project should address have been identified as:

  • What S&T will be available for incorporation into IIS?
  • What could future IIS that are safe, sustainable and robust look like?
  • How may we deliver future IIS that are safe, sustainable and robust?
  • How do we optimise possible ways of using IIS in the future?
  • What are the consequences of developing IIS?
