Foresight Flood and Coastal Defence Project

Link to project home page

The Foresight Flood and Coastal Defence Project is now nearing the end of the first major phase of work. It has created an analytical framework for modelling long term flood risk - see report here. This is producing scenarios for future risks from flooding and coastal erosion over the next 100 years, and analysing the principal causes. The aim is to use the findings to inform long-term Government policy.

A major conference to present the results will provide a detailed review of the findings. The conference is at the Institution of Civil Engineers in London on 7 July.

Progress is being made in exploring the impacts of future flood risk for the UK over the next 30-100 years

Sir David King, the Chief Scientific Advisor to the Government will chair the event, and leading experts will give presentations on the work including:

  • The main causes of future risks
  • The possible scale of future social and economic impacts
  • Future intra-urban flood risks
  • The environmental dimension of managing flooding and coastal erosion.

The event will also be an opportunity for the audience to debate the plans for the next phase of the project - which will consider how the UK might respond to the challenges identified in the findings.

For further information on the project see our homepage - this will also provide access to the full reports on the project when they are published.
